José Fernando Gomes Tavares (born April 25, 1965 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto) is a retired Portuguese footballer, who played mainly as a central midfielder.
During his career, Tavares played for CF Oliveira do Douro, F.C. Infesta, F.C. Porto, Boavista FC, S.L. Benfica (after an unsuccessful season, he returned to Boavista), União de Leiria and F.C. Paços de Ferreira. He retired in 2002, after a second spell with Infesta.
For the Portugal national football team, Tavares was in the squad that participated in the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament, and earned eight international caps in total.
